I have never been one to diet.
I love food and I like to cook.
I remember when I was a kid my dad would bring home 39 cent cheese burgers for the family…. I could eat 30 on my own and I was the youngest with two older brothers. My parents didn’t teach us the right and wrong of eating. We just ate.
We weren’t overweight either. We climbed trees and built snow tunnels for hours outside. I weighed 99 lbs. just a few hours after giving birth to my son at 18 yrs. old. I wore a size 0. But over the years my body changed and my eating didn’t.
I was diagnosed with a thyroid disorder around age 35 and I was gaining weight fast. The weight gain brought more medical problems and I couldn’t just sit around doing nothing, but my job was a sitting down job… I worked for a police department. I sat behind a desk or behind the wheel of a car, my mobile office, and I couldn’t just get out and walk a beat. I tried. But any more than a few short blocks and dispatch would be requesting me to respond to another call on the other side of town.
So, what about working out?
When? I worked 10-12-hour days 6-7 days a week. When at home they called me. I worked Friday – Sunday from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. and Monday – Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. I stayed late as needed and arrived early as needed and took calls and worked from home as requested. I supervised employees and if needed I came in to cover shifts. I didn’t get enough sleep so finding time for a workout was tough.
I tried to bring meals but at 2 a.m. if your hungry the fast food drive-in is all you have. I kept veggie trays and bags of carrots in my patrol car and learned to eat between calls and when is the middle of the night and cold coffee is your best friend.
I don’t drive the city or respond to calls. I design upcycled handbags, non-gender bags for pet park lovers and make custom t-shirt quilts. Shameless plug – I sell my designs on Etsy and at local farmers markets as Chunk’s House.
It’s a Lifestyle
Again, I don’t like to diet. I don’t like the word. I have a medical issue that makes me gain weight and weight brings on other problems. I want to change this…. I will change this. So, I am making a Lifestyle change.
Join me in sharing your trials and triumphs in making a lifestyle change. No one is right and no one is wrong as we all have our own individual road to travel, but I hope you find some insight into my journey that helps you along yours.
